Switzerland (Zermatt) Ski Holiday
To glide among the pale blue glaciers of Zermatt, breathing the hard, clean wind on nearly 200 miles of marked trails is the essence of skiing. (New York Times, December 7, 2008)
Perched at the base of the Matterhorn, the world-renowned town of Zermatt, Switzerland, lies 1620m above sea level and offers ski lovers some of the best trails and vertical drops in the world. The Zermatt region is home to four different interconnected ski areas with over 350km of ski runs, including the longest one at an astonishing 14km! From beginner trails to expert runs, skiers of all levels can take full advantage of the area. Thanks to the abundance of choices, each day presents a new adventure. One day we'll ride the highest altitude mountain railcar in Europe (which offers breathtaking views of the Italian, French and Swiss Alps) so we can begin our ski descent from 3883m. Another time, we'll spend the day criss-crossing the mountains as we take in as many of the 121 ski trails as we can. We will need to brush up on our Italian for the day we ski from the Swiss side right over the border to Cervinia, Italy worth it just for the cappuccinos at the ski lodge. Of course, you can also take a little time off from skiing and stroll the picturesque town of Zermatt with its many quaint shops and cafes. Best of all, cars are banned in town, so it is a pedestrian's paradise. And just because it is winter, doesn't mean that we won't take you hiking! We have included two guided hikes during the week, which will showcase the never-ending views of the valley and the majestic Matterhorn. The HOTEL PERREN will be our home base on the trip, offering the wonderful hospitality the Swiss are famous for - including a spa on the premises to sooth your tired muscles. The hotel is perfectly located just steps from the main ski gondola, shops and the local grocery store and will also be treating us to a special fondue dinner during our visit. You haven't truly skied until you ski Zermatt!
