CUBA
Christopher Columbus, on first seeing Cuba, wrote, "Never have human eyes beheld anything so beautiful."
We all know someone who's been to Cuba, and what is the one thing they rave about? The beaches! And for good reason - it has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. But it has far more to offer the traveller than sea, sand and sunshine. Here is an opportunity to really get to know Cuba and its people; it's a learning experience as well as a holiday. By walking through the countryside and meeting the campesinos, you will get a better understanding of life in this unique country. Cuba is spectacularly beautiful. From the tobacco fields and sugar cane plantations of the Vinales Valley to the lush vegetation of the Escambray mountain range in Topes de Collantes. The hikes are mostly half-day and there are lots of opportunities to go for a swim - from the natural springs of the San Juan River to the waterfalls of Topes de Collantes. Not only is the hiking scenic, but visiting the cities is equally interesting - colonial Trinidad, Cienfuegos, Santa Clara where we visit the Che Guevara memorial, and Havana where we will watch the "Firing of the Cannon" ceremony. And it is impossible to go to Cuba and not feel the Cuban rhythms become a part of your soul; it is one of the most musical cultures in the world. We work with excellent guides, and they add an understanding that no simple trip to the beach could provide. Finally, what about those beaches people talk about? Of course we go there too! Throughout this holiday, we have endeavoured to find "comfortable" hotels. Travelling through rural Cuba has its challenges, but with an open mind and some flexibility, this is a trip you will talk about for many years to come.
